Types Of Hex Bolts And The Materials Used

Update:Oct 28, 2022
Summary:

There are three types of hexagon bolts

Half Thread Hex Bolts, Full Thread Self Tapping Bolts, and Metric Hex Bolts.

Half Thread Hex Bolts:

They cross halfway along the body and have a hex head on the other end. Several materials are used for different types of half-threaded hex bolts, such as stainless steel, galvanized steel, smooth steel, chromed steel, and hot-dip galvanized steel. Most stainless steel bolts are used in almost all hardware applications. Corrosion-resistant grade steel and hot dip galvanized steel is used in salt water and chlorinated areas and are just as expensive. Galvanized steel has good strength and is used in auto parts. Chrome-plated steel is used in automotive parts to provide a smooth mirror finish.

Fully threaded self-tapping bolts:

They have threads all over their body and a hex head on the other end. Different grades of stainless steel, galvanized steel, and silicon bronze are used to produce self-tapping bolts. Stainless steel bolts are commonly used in hardware applications. Zinc has good corrosion resistance, while silicon bronze is a copper alloy with good strength and corrosion resistance.

Metric Hex Bolts:

They have a hex head with half or full thread. Stainless steel, zinc, and chrome-plated hex bolts are used in a variety of applications. It is further divided into JIS hexagon bolts and JIS self-tapping bolts. The only difference is that the head is a bit smaller than a normal standard metric hex bolt. Head size varies with several diameters. They are zinc plated 8.8 steel-grade metric hex bolts for strength and corrosion resistance.
